This is an excellent video from Harvard discussing the effect of environment on early childhood development. There is no doubt that socialization has a large effect on who we become as people. However, this video points out that stressors in a young child’s environment can lead to negative changes in how they perceive the world, interact socially, learn and even their physical health.
Dr. Shonkoff, from Harvard’s Center on the Developing Child, highlights the lasting effects of things like neglect and abuse when experienced at young age. From birth the brain is anticipating experiences to begin to establish a framework within which to function throughout life and, similar to building language skills, will naturally adapt to the environment it finds itself in. Ultimately this underscores the need for providing a stable environment in which your children can grow.
